Exploring the Current State of AI in Industrial Design: Where We Are at the End of 2024

How AI is being used in industrial design in 2024: A tool for creative exploration and ideation with exciting possibilities ahead.

Exploring the Current State of AI in Industrial Design: Where We Are at the End of 2024

In the rapidly evolving world of industrial design, AI has become a fascinating tool for exploration. I recently used AI to create a concept series of photography-themed products—a camera backpack, a camera, a tripod, and various organization pouches. The experience highlighted both the exciting potential and the limitations of AI in product design.

AI’s Strengths in Industrial Design Today

AI shines when it comes to ideation and mood boarding. For designers, this capability is invaluable, providing instant visual variations that might take hours to create manually. It’s an effective way to expand on a theme, gather quick inspiration, or even visualize multiple product styles. From my recent project, I found that AI allows for quick generation of visual concepts and can spark fresh creative directions.

Where AI Isn’t Ready Yet: Prototyping and Precision

When it comes to functional, manufacturable designs, AI still has a way to go. Current AI models can produce beautiful, photo-realistic concepts, but translating those into practical, production-ready products isn’t seamless. Industrial design requires precision and technical feasibility that AI doesn’t yet provide. It’s fantastic for envisioning concepts but requires significant human input to bring ideas to a production stage.

Looking Ahead: The Potential of AI in Industrial Design

Each iteration of AI brings us closer to integrating it more deeply into industrial design. By 2025, AI may be capable of handling more complex requirements, helping designers not only envision products but also bring them closer to reality with practical design suggestions. It’s exciting to imagine what’s on the horizon as AI continues to evolve.

In summary, AI in industrial design is best suited to inspire, explore, and broaden design horizons. The groundwork is there, and it feels like it won’t be long until we see significant advancements in how AI can support the full industrial design process, from ideation to prototyping.
